04.05.08 | John Lienhard "The Engine" photography exhibit opening

PRESS RELEASE

Between April 5 and 28, 2008, the G Gallery will present The Engine, an exhibit of John H. Lienhard’s photographs. Lienhard is the author and voice of the radio feature, The Engines of Our ingenuity, produced by KUHF-FM, and heard nationally on public radio. But he is also an emeritus professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Houston, and a member of the National Academy of Engineers. Over his long engineering career, he repeatedly used high speed photography to reveal a wide range of physical phenomena. He used it, in other words, to expose that which we’d all seen but were unable to register.

During the past twenty years, Lienhard has also pursued the gossamer subject of human creativity in his radio essays. Here his interest in imagery has carried over. The radio program, although purely aural, is propelled by visual imagery. That is because Lienhard knows that invention means seeing what, though not obvious, lies right before us.

The pictures in the G Gallery exhibit reflect that process. In all of them, Lienhard has sought to show us what he saw in some instant, out of the corner of his eye. Many of the photos are enhanced to recreate that moment of response – that flicker of reality. But everything in the photos was present in that moment – these are not manufactured realities. Each strives to be an idiosyncratic recognition of that world-within-a-world, as we’ve all glimpsed it. John Lienhard
